Nod your head up and down if this is you.
You buy a brand new toy for your dog and watch them tear it to shreds in minutes.
Or you buy them toy after toy after toy hoping one of them will catch their attention, only to see your favorite pair of shoes is their target… again.
It’s frustrating, right?
On one hand, we LOVE our fur babies because they are our children. On the other hand, we don’t like throwing away good money, as if we were at a casino.
All we really want is to have some dog toys that last AND not throw away good money.
Whatever the situation may be, you can turn lemons into lemonade by upcycling your jeans into the cutest dog toys.
And, you’ll help the environment too by not adding to the landfill.
It’s time to turn your old denim into ‘Designer Doggy Delights’!
The Truth Of The Situation
Odds are, you never throw away old jeans.
You keep them because they still look amazing, and it’s so hard to find the perfect pair that fit our curves perfectly.
Plus, once you lose those pesky 10… (clearing throat) okay 20-30 pounds, you can rock in your cool 90’s jeans that just happen to be back in style. 🙌
I just saw a pair that looked just like my favorite flairs on Beyonce’.
Now getting back into our jeans is nice, but we have a bigger issue to deal with… our over-stuffed closet.
Let’s face it. Our closet could use The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo.
It’s time for a closet make-over.
But the reality is she’s not coming to our house anytime soon.
So the smart thing to do is remove those old jeans from your closet, make your dog some awesome denim toys, and buy some new pairs for your curvier figure with the money you’re now saving from these long-lasting dog toys.
See… the truth isn’t all that bad.
Denim Dog Toys To The Rescue
Turning your old denim into ‘easy to make’ dog toys is a smart and practical thing to do.
One of the great things about denim is the material is robust, versatile and lasts a really long time.
Plus, seeing denim out in the open around the house gives you more style and flair. You’ll be the one with the ‘cool’ dog toys around the house.
And, if you happen to step on it accidentally, you won’t have that awkward and painful dance as you do when you step on a kids toy (think Lego).
Lucky for you, these dog toys are really simple to make, and anyone can do it.
All you need is some spare time, a little imagination, and the desire to have some fun with the process.
Let’s get started…
Donut Denim Dog Toy
A nautical chewing or fetch dog toy! Doesn’t the donut-shaped dog toy look like a lifebuoy?
- 1 cut-off jeans leg (or sleeve)
- 1 denim strip
Roll the jeans leg into a donut shape like you would for a sock bun donut.
Wrap a long denim strip around the donut to secure the donut shape and tie the ends together with an overhand knot.
Candy Denim Dog Toy
The candy-shaped denim dog toy is so easy to make!
- 1 cut-off jeans leg
- 2 cut-off jeans hems
- another cut-off jeans leg, denim scraps, T-shirt or other fabric scraps for stuffing
With the stuffing inside, roll the cut-off jeans leg into a candy shape.
This is a great ‘fetch’ toy.
Easy Jeans Waistband Dog Toy
The jeans waistband dog toy is perfect for chewing and playing tug-of-war.
- 1 jeans waistband
This is the simplest one to do. Cut the waistband and play.
Crown Knot Denim Dog Toy
The knotted denim dog toy has a nice weight – it’s perfect for playing fetch.
- 4 demin strips
Temporarily secure four denim strips with an elastic or hair tie.
To hide the tails, push the needle-nose pliers through the knotted denim dog toy, grab the tail and pull it through the toy. Then trim the ends.
Y-Shaped Denim Dog Toy
The Y-shaped dog toy looks complicated but it isn’t more difficult to make than the knotted denim dog toy.
- 6 denim strips
Start like you did for the crown knot (square knot) dog toy: Begin with four strips and tie a series of crown or square knots. When you reach the middle of the strips, add two more denim strips.
Now start knotting in two direction – knotting together two ‘old’ strips and two ‘new’ strips. Finish the Y-shaped dog toy like the rope braided dog toy.
Tips for the braided and the donut dog toy: Cut off the hems, then depending on the size of the jeans cut each jeans leg into 4 – 6 long strips.
Fold the strips so that the raw edges are enclosed. You can use pins to temporarily hold the strips together. Remove the pins as you braid.
I hope your mind is racing with excitement as you realize how easy this really is.
Why This Is Important
Dogs need lots of love and plenty of attention. They need to be played with. They desperately want our attention.
Playing with your dog regularly will keep them healthy. The more active your dog is, the more they’ll have minimal amounts of anxiety and stress.
And it’s no secret that separation anxiety is one of the biggest problems a dog will have when left alone.
I wrote this post to give you some great tips about making homemade dog toys that last.
